Heights Of Abraham – Electric Hush (1995) album cover

Some albums seem designed to slow the world down. Electric Hush, the 1995 release by British trio Heights Of Abraham, is one of them. Built around spacious electronic arrangements, understated rhythms and warm instrumental textures, it captures a particular strand of the UK's mid-90s downtempo culture.

The project brought together Steve Cobby, known for his work with Fila Brazillia, and former Chakk members Jake Harries and Sim Lister. Their different musical backgrounds meet naturally here, combining electronic production with elements of jazz, funk and ambient music.

The album unfolds at an unhurried pace. Softly shuffling beats, deep basslines and hazy synthesizers provide the foundation, while saxophone, piano and guitar add an organic quality to the arrangements. Jake Harries' restrained vocals bring an additional layer of warmth without disturbing the record's relaxed atmosphere.

Tracks such as "High Time" and "What's The Number?" introduce a stronger urban pulse, while "Olive Branching" develops a more restless groove. Elsewhere, "700 Channels" and "Sunyatta" drift into more introspective territory, balancing gentle funk with spacious electronic textures.

Rather than following a conventional trip-hop formula, Electric Hush moves freely between Downtempo, Ambient, Chillout and Acid Jazz. Its strength lies in this balance: the music remains rhythmically engaging while preserving an almost weightless sense of space.

Nearly three decades later, the album still sounds like an invitation to step away from the noise and settle into a slower, more contemplative world.
